The lead writer Ralph Nanan, Professor at the University of Sydney emphasized on how the high fibrous diet is broken down in the gut by bacteria which boosts the immunity of the mother and fetus. The research was authored in the journal Nature Communications. 

However, the study stated that levels of acetate are supposed to be decreased because of fiber fermentation in the gut, which links to preeclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is a condition in which there are certain insolvents found in the mother's body. These include:

  • hypertension or high blood pressure
  • protein in the urine and 
  • severe swelling
