World Osteoporosis Day 2019: Ayurveda Diet And Lifestyle To Treat Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease which causes the bones to become more weak and frail, that even a fall, twist or mild stress and pressure will lead to fracture. The most common osteoporosis-related fractures usually occur in the spine, hip, wrist and waist. In this disease, the bone thickness, density and quality are decreased. Bone is a tissue that is continuously being broken down, and it gets replaced with the new tissue. From childhood till adulthood, the bones get developed, and it gets stiff. Osteoporosis occurs at that stage when the formation of new bones does not take place during the loss of old bone.

Osteoporosis has an impact on both men and women of all races, but its effect is mostly found in women who have reached the stage of menopause. So to overcome this disease, there are few Ayurvedic diet tips and some lifestyle changes that will help in treating Osteoporosis if followed accurately.

Adequate Calcium and Vitamin D Consumption

Both of these aspects are important for premenopausal and postmenopausal women as well as men also. The primary sources of calcium comprise milk and many other dairy products such as yoghurt, hard cheese and cottage cheese. Apart from these, almond milk is a good source of calcium which helps the bones to grow stronger. Vitamin D also helps the body in calcium absorption and augments bone health. Milk supplemented with vitamin D is a primary dietary source. Fatty fish, soy milk, egg yolks are also some other good sources of vitamin D.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and Vegetables are always recommended because it helps a person to stay healthy. These are an essential source of manganese, vitamin B, C, E, K and phytochemicals like carotenoids. Fruits such as apples, peaches, papaya, mangoes, grapes, pears, bananas and pineapples are recommended for good bone health. Vegetables include fresh beans, onions, garlic, peppers, carrots, dark and light green leafy vegetables and lotus root protects the bones against osteoporosis.

Some other sources of food and herbs for strengthening bones are:

  • pumpkin seeds
  • millet
  • brown rice
  • cashews
  • quinoa
  • whole wheat
  • flaxseed
  • sesame
  • ashwagandha
  • Triphala
  • Brahmi (recommended by Ayurveda to add it in a regular diet).

Certain lifestyle habits such as intake of salty foods reduce the calcium level from our body, which in result makes the bone weaker, and the person becomes more prone to osteoporosis. Along with this, regular smoking and drinking should be avoided because smoking cigarettes is known for quick bone loss and drinking excessive alcohol increases the risk of fracture because of the high risk of falling and poor nutrition.
